A Study of the Confucian Classics with Annotations and Commentaries Printed in Song Dynasty

Abstract: Confucian classics being printed with woodblock print began during the years of Later Tang of Five Dynasties, while the Nine Classics were published superintended by the National Academy. Since then, the spread way of Confucian classics had changed from the methods of hand-writing and carving in stone to the method of woodblock print. It greatly promoted the dissemination and popularization of Confucian classics. In the Song Dynasty, with the prosperity and development of skills of woodblock print, the texts of Confucian classics were established gradually. The Thirteen Classics was regarded as the core content of Confucian classics. The annotated and explicated edition of Thirteen Classics, being popularized in the later ages, was developed from he annotated edition, the commentary edition, the interpretation edition and the edition with annotation and commentary. It was finished during the Song Dynasty. The Song Dynasty is the period of the texts of Thirteen Confucian classics being various and established. Thus the study on the publication of Confucian classics with annotations and commentaries of the Song Dynasty is very important for the study of Confucian classics, bibliology and the history of publication.

The extent of this paper is related to the traditional Thirteen Classics with annotations and commentaries. The characteristics of Confucian classics publication in the Song Dynasty are usually being published in whole as a collection. It is a different from other kinds of documents. Though each collection may consist of classics different in number, five classics, six classics, nine classics or eleven classics, the editions of the same several classics in different collections are the same. It was very common in the Song Dynasty. Classics in one collection were carved by the same engravers and published at the same place in the same time. The characteristics of the edition styles of the classics are showed the same. Thus we can find out the features of the classics being lost by the classics being survived to the present day in the same collection. We also can divide the systems of editions by these features to have the full view on editions of Confucian classics of Song Dynasty.

In view of above consideration, the editions of Confucian classics of Song Dynasty were fallen roughly into a few categories by contents, unannotated edition, edition of separate classic with annotation, edition of annotation and phonetic notation, commentary edition, and annotated and explicated edition. The important publications of each edition are discussed respectively in each chapter of this paper. Style characteristics and literature values of each edition are analyzed and discussed. Parts of texts of some important editions are collated in order to reveal the relationship among some editions. I attempt to link the books survived to the present day with documentary records and the external features of edition styles with internal textual collations to show the full view on publishing Confucian classics with annotations and commentaries, the development of contents of classics in the Song Dynasty, and to realize the internal value of Song editions of Confucian classics.
